It’s that time of year when credential holders can expect to receive notifications from the ATCB regarding both annual renewal and five-year recertification. While it’s easy to confuse the meaning of the two terms, they are two distinct processes that require attention in different ways. Depending upon the credential(s) you hold, you may be responsible for meeting the requirements of one or both. We are here to help the process be as effortless as possible for you!
Annual Renewal is required of all ATCB credential holders: ATR-Provisional (ATR-P), Registered Art Therapist (ATR), Board Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC) and Art Therapy Certified Supervisor (ATCS). All credential holders must complete their annual renewal and/or recertification application(s) and pay their maintenance fee(s) (see chart below) each year by June 30 in order to maintain the credential(s) you’ve worked so hard to obtain. The annual renewal application includes not only the payment of the fee but also completion of the ethics attestation, which is equally important in terms of keeping the ATCB updated regarding adherence to the ATCB Code of Ethics, Conduct, and Disciplinary Procedures.
Five-year Recertificationis required of only ATR-BCs and ATCS’s. These credential holders must meet continuing education (CE) requirements as outlined in the ATR-BC Recertification Standards. Over the course of each five-year recertification period, ATR-BCs must complete a minimum of 100 CE credits, including at least six (6) in ethics. ATCSs must complete a minimum of ten (10) CE credits in clinical supervision as part of the 100 CE credits requirement. Each year, out of all the ATR-BCs/ATCSs who are due to recertify, ten (10) percent are selected at random for audit. If you are selected for audit, you must provide a listing of all CE activities for the previous five years and include supporting documentation for each activity. Five-year recertification applications are due June 1, and there is no application fee.
The ATCB offers the option of a 90-day recertification extension for completing CE requirements. You must apply online, and the fee for an extension is $50.
In lieu of completing the CE requirements, ATR-BCs/ATCSs may opt to take and pass the ATCB Examination (ATCBE)during the June ATCBE computer-based test administration (or the September exam administration, if a recertification extension is requested and approved). The ATCBE fee is $275.
If you are an ATR-BC/ATCS and it is your year to both renew and recertify your credential(s), please be sure that you complete both applications. In order to receive your updated ATR-BC (and ATCS) certificate and wallet card, you must complete both the annual renewal and five-year recertification applications. If you believe you have completed both but do not receive an official approval packet from the ATCB via postal mail, please contact the National Office as soon as possible. You do not want to risk losing your credential(s) by not completing the required applications.
Final Notes to Consider:
- We hope you’ve heard by now that the ATCB is going green in 2019. This means we will not mail you a paper renewal or recertification application unless you contact the National Office to request a paper form(s). Annual renewal and five-year recertification application may be completed online via MyATCB. The process is easy so don’t delay!
- Email notifications regarding annual renewals will be sent by May 3, so please be sure to check your email often and notify the National Office (via MyATCB or email) if your contact information has changed. ATR-BCs/ATCSs who are due to recertify this year should have already received notification from the ATCB. Please let us know if you’ve yet to receive, as we’re here to help.
- The ATCB’s annual renewal and five-year recertification processes are separate from the American Art Therapy Association’s (AATA’s) annual membership fees. Also, the ATCB no longer offers a discount on annual renewal fees for members of the AATA.
